How to cut
the cost of your car insurance
When you are young
and ambitious there are few events which are more exciting
than buying your first car. However, there are few events LESS
exciting than getting your first quotations for insurance, and
realising that running your own motor could well be beyond
your financial reach.
The problem is that
statistically young people between the age of 17 and 25 around
about six times more likely to have an accident than people of
twice their age. Furthermore these accidents tend to be far
worse with a much higher incidence of injury or even death!
Hardly surprisingly a lot of insurance companies will not
touch anyone under the age of 25 and those that do, charge
what they see as a reasonable commercial rate (in other words,
several times what you're probably expecting to have to
play!).
That is the
problem, so here is the solution. You have two show the
insurers that you are going to be a reasonable risk before you
will get anything like a reasonable quotation. To do this you
first of all need to choose a car which is in a low insurance
bracket; forget about sports cars or the latest boy racer
must-have. By a fairly cheap one, and if it has one or two
dents already then so much the better; you will be less
inclined to make a claim if you back it into someone's garden
wall! If you can persuade an experienced adult driver to be
named as a second driver only policy then that could cut your
premium substantially; several major insurers like to see that
better risk drivers take an interest in the vehicle. When you
fill in the insurance proposal form offer to pay the maximum
voluntary excess that you can afford; this can bring the
quotation down quite sharply. Consider taking a Pass Plus
course; this is a government backed initiative under which you
take extra lessons which include experience at driving under
poor weather conditions, at night, on the motorway, etc and
although these cost money (you should usually allow between
£150 and £300) some local authorities are prepared to
subsidise this with a grant, and you can get substantial
discounts from some insurers after successfully passing
through all the modules, so you could save more on your
insurance policy than the cours has cost you. Finally, drive
carefully and safely and resist any temptation to break the
traffic laws in any way; a clean record would earn you a
substantial no claims discount, a few points on your licence
could make it even more expensive to get insurance than it is
now!
